James Gilchrist & Anna Tilbrook: Winterreise

Join tenor James Gilchrist and pianist Anna Tilbrook for a performance of Schubert’s extraordinary Winterreise. Setting twenty-four poems by Wilhelm Müller that follow a solitary traveller’s journey through a bleak winter landscape, the work explores themes of love, loss, memory, and resilience. By turns haunting, tender, and deeply moving, Winterreise remains a profound meditation on the human experience, brought vividly to life here by two of today’s most distinguished interpreters of song.

The event begins with a talk from Dr Katy Hamilton, a noted specialist in 19th-century German song and familiar voice on BBC Radio 3, who will offer insights into Schubert’s masterpiece and the rich musical world from which it emerged.
